SF International Arts Festival: The Agatsuma Ensemble

San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) 2010 offers more than 60 performances presented by 28 arts organizations and ensembles at Fort Mason Center (FMC) and other venues. FMC performances occur in the Cowell and Southside theaters and in the Herbst and Festival Pavilions.
SFIAF 2010's theme, "The Truth in Knowing/Now: Threads in Time, Place, Culture," reflects the festivals ties to local and global performers and artists. SFIAF 2010 features artists from the Bay Area, New York City, New Jersey, and the countries of China, France, Germany, the Republic of Ireland, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, and Syria. The SFIAF opening reception in the Cowell Theater Lobby features multiple artists on Wednesday, May 19, 6:30pm-7:30pm Tickets to the reception are FREE (RSVP on SFIAF web site).As per our tradition, SFIAF's opening reception welcomes international artists who have travelled to San Francisco to participate in the Festival and introduces them to their local counterparts and a Bay Area audience.
For the 2010 opening night performance, SFIAF celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of the Japanese ship, the Kanrin Maru, in Yerba Buena Harbor with the opening night concert, Beyond Borders, by the Agatsuma Ensemble. The show is the only west coast performance on his 2010 U.S. tour. Agatsuma plays the Tsugaru-Shamisen and infuses traditional Japanese sounds with contemporary musical influes of blues, rock, dance music, folk, flamenco and funk. Tickets are $25 ($20 advance) for reserved seating.
