Room 165, Building C
For the first time in a long time, the "For Rent" sign is
out at Fort Mason Center. The 2,500 square-foot space, formerly
occupied by a small museum and cultural center, is on the
first floor of Building C.
"We are looking for a nonprofit organization that will utilize
the space for exciting public programming," said Alexander
Zwissler, Executive Director of the Fort Mason Foundation.
"Certainly, the space works for gallery and museum programs,
but we are open to other kinds of organizations that will
bring new life to the Center as well."
Zwissler anticipates a high level of interest in the space
and that many groups will submit proposals.
"It is important," Zwissler said, "that we find an organization
that has a record of past accomplishment as well as a history
of fiscal and managerial competence. But it is also important
that the new resident contributes to the vibrancy of the Center
through the quality of the programming and how that programming
complements the diversity that already exists here."
Zwissler believes that the nonprofit with the best proposal
will have a chance to be part of the Foundations plans
to restore the Centers buildings and piers, re-energize
the campus, and eventually open the 55,000 square-foot west
pier as new programming space.
"The future is extraordinarily bright for the Center," he
said, "and we very much want any new resident organization
to contribute to the spirit of our community."
