Most of us are familiar with stories about foster children.
More often than not, the tales reveal the tough lives of the
children, sometimes moving from family to family and from
home to home, making it difficult to build bonds and receive
ongoing support and encouragement. A Home Within is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to making these lives better, helping
children and youth in foster care to build strong, lasting
relationships.
In April A Home Within presents its newest project
a month-long exhibition of work created by young people utilizing
photography and written expression as a means to prepare youth
to leave foster care with skills, motivation, and self-confidence.
The goal is to help participants enter college programs or
secure jobs that are part of an established career path.
As a special treat, students are taking portraits of visitors
on April 9 and 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. for $5.
Supported in part by Fort Mason Foundations Shulte Grants
for the Arts and Crafts, "Fostering Art" will take
place at the Centers Firehouse, showing the larger community
other ways of viewing life in foster care.
The Shulte Grants program is designed to foster, promote,
and provide education in the arts and crafts for both children
and adults and its purpose is to strengthen existing institutions
that support artists and launch new cultural endeavors.
"Fostering Art" begins Sunday, April 3 with a 3
p.m. reception. For more information please see the
April 3 calendar listing and be sure to visit www.fosteringart.org.
