APRIL
2005
Cowell Theater
You could call it youth entertaining youth. The City Ballet
School stages Sergei Prokofievs delightful Peter
and the Wolf April 30 and May 1 at the Cowell Theater.
New choreography, created through the collaboration of former
Bolshoi and Kirov dancers, Galena Alexandrova and Yuri Zhukov,
freshens the story for those who have seen it before. Forty
dancers, ranging in age from five to 18, tell the tale of
a fearless young boy, a ferocious wolf, and a cast of characters
that include a bird, a cat, and a duck.
City Ballet School has in its 17-year history gained a reputation
for placing dancers in professional troupes and college programs.
The school is also the home of the City Youth Ballet Foundation,
a nonprofit organization devoted to the introduction of dance
to inner city children.
Born in the Ukraine in the latter part of the 19th century,
Prokofiev created the piece for a childrens theater
in 1936. It has been a popular story done as symphony,
theater, and dance since. An interactive introduction
to the piece can be found on Phil Tulgas web site, "Music
through the Curriculum," at
www.philtulga.com.

30 calendar listing or call the City Ballet School (415)
