The emphasis is on youth this May as a number of events of
special appeal to young people take place at Fort Mason Center
(FMC). Heres a sampling:
Sail Camp
Fort Mason Center resident Sailing Education Adventures
(SEA) gets a jumpstart on summer when it holds a Sail Camp
Open House at the Marin Yacht Club (MYC) on May 14. Sail Camp
is SEAs award-winning on-the-water instruction program
for children ages 8 to 16. Beginning to advanced sailors learn
self-confidence, seamanship, and appreciation of the Bay in
a fun, non-competitive, team-building environment. All classes
are taught by US Sailing Association certified instructors.
SEA also offers adult classes for all levels from beginner
to advanced.
2004 was a year of awards for SEA. The MYC, the site of Sail
Camp and its co-sponsor, received the Pacific Inter-Club Yachting
Associations Admiral Nimitz trophy awarded annually
to only one of 95 member clubs for most improved junior
sailing program. Additionally, US Sailings Community
Sailing Council awarded SEA the prestigious "10 Years
of Hallmark Performance Award" for promoting public access
to sailing for more than 10 years. SEA has been in the business
of responsible sailing for more than 20 years.
Sail Camp begins
in mid-June. Adult classes are ongoing. Sail Camp "Camperships"
(scholarships) are available based on financial need. Attend
the Open House at the MYC in May, or call (415) 775-8779 or

for more information.
DancEsteem
"Children
are natural dancers. They dance with imagination all the time."
With these words Director Takami Craddock introduces us to
DancEsteem, a dance program for children that incorporates
creative movement, ballet, and modern dance.
On May 15, DancEsteem presents their annual dance performance
at the Cowell Theater. Dancers ages three to 14 are joined
by professional dance groups including Toumei MoBu Dance Group,
combining modern dance with Butoh, and hip-hop artists Freeplay
Dance Crew. The performance is a one-of-a-kind family event.
Craddock started DancEsteem in 1995 with the goal of building
self-esteem and confidence in children through dance. Her
method of teaching dance to children as young as three years
old combines creativity with technical skills.
Partake of a unique dance experience this May. See May
15 in the calendar or visit www.mobudance.com/dancesteem.html
for more details.
School
Of The Arts
Another school known for combining creativity
with a sound technical background is San Franciscos
School of the Arts (SOTA). A high school of the San Francisco
Unified School District, SOTA accepts students by audition
only, thereby maintaining an extraordinary artistic and academic
program of the highest quality. Dance students study modern/jazz/blues,
ballet, and choreography. Training is at a pre-professional
level.
Once again SOTA has chosen the Cowell Theater as the site
for its annual dance concert. Under the direction of Elvia
Marta, the students present a diverse program representing
the many styles taught at the school. Choreography is by students,
artists-in-residence Graciela Acedo, Lynn Brilhante, Alena
Cawthorne, Marina Hotchkiss, Lynlee Towne, and special guest
choreographer, Robert Henry Johnson.
Take advantage of this opportunity to see Americas
future dance stars. See the May
20 calendar listing for details and visit www.sfsota.org
for information about SOTA.
