Fort Mason Foundation
Main Office Lobby,
Building A
As John Melvin states, he paints "scenes of people happily
living in this beautiful city." A self-described impressionist,
he infuses his paintings with a golden glow. Young girls stroll
on the seashore, men walk dogs, babies play in the sand. All
seem seduced by the beauty of this city.
Like
many who love this area intensely, Melvin is not a native.
He moved to San Francisco in 1995 from New York and the world
of banking, and began taking art classes and painting. He
has exhibited widely ever since. His work is characterized
by a sunny exuberance for people and places. He cites the
Society of Six and the Bay Area Figurative School as influences.
His portraits reveal a more intense side, and, not surprisingly,
he draws inspiration for them from the German Expressionists.
John Melvin is showing cityscapes, landscapes, and portraits
in the Fort Mason Foundation Main Office Lobby through October
21. He will be present in the lobby to discuss his work during
the Open Studios weekend at Fort Mason Center on October 15
and 16. For more information, see the Visual Arts listing
and visit www.johnfmelvin.com.
