Sculptor Ann Weber & her work at the Pacific Rim Sculptors Group’s exhibit at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary ArtJANUARY 2006

Sculpture On The Pacific Rim

Building C

Sculptors often work in isolation, wrestling rock, wood, glass, metal, clay, fiber, or other materials into fanciful shapes in their lonely studios. Sculptures range from tiny tabletop pieces to room-sized installations or giant outdoor monuments. Art lovers marvel at the end results – compelling objects on floors, walls, or in public spaces.

However, there are not many opportunities for sculptors to meet patrons or other artists to share ideas and talk about art. For nearly 20 years, the Pacific Rim Sculptors Group (PRSG) has organized events and exhibits to lure sculptors out of their studios to mingle with other creative people and art lovers. A series of PRSG social events at Fort Mason Center continues in January with a lecture by leading Bay Area sculptors. The event is also open to the public.

In addition to bi-monthly meetings and arts events, PRSG sponsors many exhibitions throughout the Bay Area and Northern California, including a regular series at 600 Townsend in San Francisco. The group invites guest curators for the shows, including local art critics, collectors, gallery owners, and museum staff. Recently PRSG held acclaimed exhibits at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and the Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael, CA. In 2004, the group introduced Pacific Rim style to the East Coast with a well-reviewed show at the Grounds For Sculpture center in New Jersey.

Six Bay Area sculptors founded PRSG in 1988 and the group has become a strong presence in the arts. Originally founded as a forum for artists, the group has expanded its mission to promote public awareness of sculpture and increase artistic diversity and excellence in sculpture. PRSG publishes a newsletter and maintains a web site, online gallery, and slide registry. The group also organizes an annual show for student sculptors at 600 Townsend that brings exciting new work into public view.

Meet fascinating artists and discover the latest trends in sculpture at the Pacific Rim Sculptors Group event. Refer to January 12 and www.pacificrimsculptorsgroup.org for details. RESCHEDULED TO 2/9 SAT.
