Fort Mason Cneter by Michael SchwabRumblings & Ramblings

January 2006

BATS GOES HOLLYWOOD AND MORE…
Two from BATS Improv went from stage to celluloid – temporarily. Corey Rosen is featured in the recently released film, Rent. BATS executive director John Kovacevich is featured in Pursuit of Happyness, due out next year with Will Smith. Lots of stuff going on at improv headquarters. BATS unveils a brand new curriculum upgrade this month and celebrates 20 years of improvisational theatre training. And Sara Butz is the group’s new marketing and PR person.

SPEAKING OF ACTORS…Ed Harris was here 20 years ago this month. He appeared in Scar – along with his wife, actress Amy Madigan – at the Magic Theatre. The play was a premiere by the Obie Award-winning playwright Murray Mednick. In January a quarter of a century ago, Magic presented The Man Who Killed the Buddha by Martin Epstein.

CAMPUS NOTES…Construction begins on Fort Mason Center’s Firehouse, Gatehouse, and Guard Station to restore, improve, and seismically retrofit these historic landmark buildings as part of a larger preservation undertaking. Preparations are also being made for the implementation of "Park for Preservation" that will use net proceeds from paid parking to fund similar additional preservation work in the future. Paid parking, with modest rates, is expected to start in May.

MUSIC FOR YOUTH…Mentioned in an earlier Rumblings, Ramblings column, there is now more information on the Blue Bear School of Music’s First Annual Music for Youth Benefit. We’re glad to publicize the big event to be held at San Francisco’s Independent on Divisadero in February. Bonnie Hayes, Robben Ford, and Vicki Randle (Tonight Show Band) will perform as will Blue Bear youth bands Hella Kitty and the Nash Brothers. Dance music is provided by Pride and Joy. Go to www .bluebearmusic.org for more information.

MORE BLUE BEAR…Kevin Marlatt, former head of the San Francisco Unified School District’s Arts Education Master Plan, joins Blue Bear School of Music as executive director. He also drums, we are told. Welcome.

MORE CONSTRUCTION…Greens is expanding. Work is under way on a new private dining room – another room with a view. For the observant, all those workers on Greens’ roof weren’t praying to the sun gods. They were replacing all of the beautiful clay tiles with new clay tiles.

COMING SOON…While you are checking our calendar section for all the great things happening in January, here is a sampling of Fort Mason Center events in the coming months – San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, San Francisco Arts of Pacific Asia Show, the San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show, and the Rhone Rangers Annual Tasting.
