Festival Pavilion
As winter storms subside, the Bay Area looks forward
to warmer weather and spring foliage. Get a head start on
the blooming season at an event in honor of flowers available
year round — beautiful, exotic orchids. "Hot House
Hotties and Their Cool Friends" is the theme for the
2006 Pacific Orchid Exposition sponsored by the San Francisco
Orchid Society (SFOS).
More
than 50 orchid nurseries from all over the planet transform
Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion into an indoor jungle
with close to 150,000 plants in every hue, shape, and size.
The expo also offers tours and educational demonstrations
on the latest trends in orchid cultivation. Orchids grow in
many world regions, from tropical lands to mountainous areas
and award-winners from every climate are on display at the
expo.
The cool sound of the Max Perkoff Jazz Ensemble filters through
the pavilion during the gala benefit preview party on Thursday
night, February 16. Preview partygoers also enjoy delicious
appetizers and wine samples from two dozen California vintners,
many of whom return to the pavilion for the Rhone Rangers
tasting event in mid-March.
Other wineries participating in the gala appeared at the Zinfandel
Advocates and Producers (ZAP) tasting event, which took place
at Fort Mason Center in late January. A silent auction of
fine vintages benefits the SFOS scholarship program to promote
orchid education, cultivation, and conservation efforts.
Orchid mania takes on a new dimension this year at the Colquhoun
Glassworks glass orchid show in the Conference Center February
18 and 19 the same weekend as the orchid expo.
Escape to a floral fantasy at the Pacific Orchid Expo. See

16 and www.orchidsanfrancisco.org
