For nearly two decades, the Gold Country Classic has been attracting top athletes to compete for titles in gymnastics excellence. The Gold Country Classic enters a new era in 2006 as its sponsor, San Mateo Gymnastics, moves it to a larger venue at Fort Mason Center and expands the competition to include female gymnasts and more teams from other states.
Gold Country Classic event director Eric Totman estimates that the 2006 classic has more than 500 male and female gymnasts six to 18 years in age. Contestants have abilities ranging from beginners at Level 4 to the most advanced Level 10 and Elite categories.
Prior to 2006, the event took place at San Mateo Gymnastics' smaller facility, resulting in waiting lists for teams eager to compete. Totman hopes the new, bigger location means that everyone has a chance to enter the contest.
Gymnastics is a very challenging competitive sport requiring flexibility, agility, strength, endurance, speed, and coordination. The Gold Country Classic includes competitions in floor and vault gymnastics — two of the toughest forms to achieve. Expect to see astonishing handsprings and back flips, phenomenal mid-air twists and turns, and amazing feats of balance and timing during both male and female competitions.
