Warhammer: Quake City RumbleMARCH 2006

The Dogs Of Warhammer

Building C

Get ready for tabletop mayhem as the independent Warhammer game tournament (IndyGT for those in the know) thunders into Fort Mason Center’s Building C in early March for the Quake City Rumble. For two conflict-filled days, contestants set up complex miniature battle tableaus and compete in five rounds to determine who wins the tournament.

Warhammer is a popular fantasy war game emphasizing combat and battlefield strategies. Game enthusiasts all over the world play Warhammer with imaginary armies composed of magical creatures like dwarves, elves, lizard men, vampires, and orcs.

Fort Mason Center has hosted a number of gaming events, including Magic: The Gathering’s world championship in 2005. Like Magic players, some Warhammer players use cards, paper, and their imagination to keep track of their complicated maneuvers. However, many Warhammer players use toy soldiers — incredibly detailed figures depicting characters such as goblins, skeleton warriors, and more.

Warhammer fans make their own gaming pieces by assembling armies and accessories from plastic or metal components and adding details with paint and decals. Others don’t stop there, but also build terrain, fortifications, and siege machines, such as catapults and battering rams.

Artistic Warhammer enthusiasts can earn painting points that might influence the outcome of tournaments. Spectators can view some of these elaborate game installations for free during the Warhammer tournament at Fort Mason Center.

Late-night gamers have another chance for victory at a small WarMachine tournament on Friday, March 3. The organizers of Quake City Rumble have created special scenarios reflecting California conditions, including coastal fog, earthquakes, a heat wave, and a “governator” character.

See what it takes to win a very strange war at the Quake City Rumble. For details, refer to March 3 and www.leadership2.org.
