Festival Pavilion
It wouldn’t be spring without the return of the Contemporary Crafts Market to Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion. Now in its 16th year in Northern California, the crafts market offers ceramics, jewelry, glassware, textiles, wearable art, furniture, and much more.
A jury selects artists for the crafts market based on the creativity and quality of their work. In addition to the more traditional crafts, you can expect to see a variety of new media and methods. Hand-woven items from fiber artisans are prominent; as are gourd artworks, paper creations, and works in metal, stone, leather, and wood.
The Contemporary Crafts Market is a labor of love for founder Roy Helms, who is both an artist and an expert in marketing art. In 1986, Helms founded the Contemporary Crafts Market, initially exhibiting in Southern California and then expanding to Fort Mason Center. He created the crafts market to help artists reach a wider audience.
“As individuals, most crafts persons have limited resources,” said Helms. “We work with crafts people to develop a sense of marketing. By working together, we can accomplish a greater mission in the arts.”
More than 225 artists participate in the 2006 crafts market, including Bay Area jewelry artist Marian Hunziker-Larsen, who blends beautiful woven fibers with semi-precious gemstones, fossils, or crystals. Her unique pieces include necklaces, medallions, amulets, brooches, and earrings.
