Conference Center, Building A & Herbst Pavilion
While it may be the biggest, the Contemporary Crafts Market is not the only arts event taking place at Fort Mason Center in March. Art lovers and savvy shoppers have three more reasons to return later in the month — Jim Caldwellí’s “Venice Revisited” painting show, the Gem Faire, and the Bustamante Antique Show and Sale.
Painting Coastal Light
Architect and painter Jim Caldwell is fascinated by the play of light across landscapes and explores this phenomenon in his paintings. His “Venice Revisited” exhibit in the Building A Conference Center features 30 canvases drenched in the rich colors and magical scenes of Venice, Italy. Other oil paintings in the show highlight buildings by the sea in San Francisco and the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.
Caldwell has been exhibiting his crisp, vibrant paintings for more than 20 years and has also published an art book, The Golden Coast: From Big Sur To the Russian River (Bored Feet Press, 2002). For more information, see March 26 or www.jimcaldwellart.com.
Gems, Beads, Crystals & More
Glittering piles of gems, jewelry, and precious metals and minerals line every aisle of the Herbst Pavilion during the Gem Faire in late March. The 17th annual extravaganza features nearly 100 dealers with scores of gleaming treasures priced to sell. Gem Faire vendors visit remote regions of the world to find gorgeous rough and finished stones, crystals, and fossils.
Shoppers can purchase finished jewelry and carvings, or find all the materials needed to create their own masterpieces. Experts offer workshops in a variety of techniques, such as wire wrapping, bead stringing, chain making, and jewelry design. See March 24 and www.gemfaire.com for details and special Internet coupons.
Timeless Treasures
The very end of March brings “the show worth waiting for” — Bustamante Antique Show & Sale. For more than 30 years, Bustamante Enterprises has organized quality antique shows with fine collections meeting the highest standards. The March show features rarely seen items such as vintage timepieces, porcelains, bronzes, folk art, quilts, and rugs. Some of the dealers at the show specialize in heirloom furniture and jewelry, art glass, linens, or silver. Visit www.bustamante-shows.com and refer to March 31 for more information.
