Cowell Theater
The exciting and eclectic styles of the
Gil Chun Dance Company return to the Cowell Theater in June with the fun-filled Bay Area Follies (San Francisco Edition) variety show. This family-friendly program stars the energetic Chun and performers of all ages, including many retirees who sing and dance their way into audiences’ hearts.
Bay Area performer and dance instructor Gil Chun is inspired by Broadway musicals from the golden age of theater. He also makes room for rock ‘n’ roll and original compositions and choreography in his productions. The major set piece for the 2006 show features selections from The Man Of La Mancha, including Don Quixote’s memorable anthem, “The Impossible Dream.”
A live ukelele ensemble accompanies the performers in the hula segment, which includes modern and traditional dances and favorite songs like “Little Grass Shack.” The stage starts rockin’ when Chun reprises his popular tribute to “the King” as he sings Elvis Presley’s greatest hits.
Hawaii also sets the scene for the original work Asian American Warrior In New York City and San Francisco. This dance play follows three Hawaiian men as they journey to Europe, New York, and the West Coast, where they go to the famed Forbidden City nightclub in 1940s San Francisco. As an added bonus, some of the original Forbidden City performers join the cast.
Relive golden moments of classic theater, dance, and song with Gil Chun and his lively dance company. See June 10 for more details about the performance.
