Magic Theatre,
Building D
Next year Fort Mason Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary. But if the foundation thinks it’s been around for a while, the Magic Theatre turns 40 in 2007. After a moving performance of Paula Vogel’s The Long Christmas Ride Home at the Magic on June 6, the Magic Theatre and its artistic director Chris Smith were honored by the Fort Mason Foundation Advisory Council as Fort Mason Center Legends.
As part of the countdown to its 30th anniversary, the Foundation is acknowledging some of its many long-standing relationships with people and organizations. In his acceptance remarks, Smith talked at length about what the future holds for Fort Mason Center.
“I hope,” Smith said, “that the new vision for the Center is bold and that we keep in mind the three c’s — community, creativity, and courage.”
More than 100 people came for the play, award, and reception. The award — a limited edition photograph of the West Pier by renowned photographer Michael Kenna — was presented by advisory council co-chairs, Laura King Pfaff and Martin Quinn.
“Fort Mason Center has an incredibly rich history,” said Alexander Zwissler, the foundation’s executive director. “We are extremely proud of the organizations that have started here and grown, such as the Magic Theatre, to national and international prominence. We honor Chris and the Magic and their contribution to our community and to Fort Mason Center .”
