LINES Ballet School: Preparing For A Creative Journey

Cowell Theater

The LINES Ballet School Pre-Professional Summer Program returns to the Cowell for performances in July and August. The prestigious summer session guides dance students 13 to 21 years old on a creative journey that leaves them poised on the thresholds of their dance careers.

Slow Food USADuring the summer program, students learn with great dancers from all over the world in four weeks of all-day classes that run Monday through Friday, leading to a performance at the Cowell. The young dancers practice many forms — ballet, pointe, modern, improvisation, jazz, Afro-Brazilian, flamenco, and Feldenkrais movements. Students also study music, metaphor, dance history, and healthy ways to dance as part of the intensive curriculum.

After laying the groundwork, students learn choreography from the repertory of the famed Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet. In many cases, summer program participants train with world-class dancers and choreographers who perform with LINES Ballet and collaborated on the works being studied.

“In any training what is being taught are values,” said Alonzo King, artistic director of LINES Ballet. “The goal of art is higher than art. What we are really interested in are masterpieces of humanity.”

Witness the inspiring moments when graceful student dancers realize their professional dreams. For details, see July 7 and www.linesballet.org.
