What do you get when you match jury-selected choreographers with local composers, and coax them to collaborate on 11 live performances — each in ten minutes or less? If you guessed a cutting-edge showcase with more than 80 performers presenting premiere dance works to original music compositions, you’re right on the money.
Produced by Dance Outre and Lorien Fenton Presents, “Collaboration! Dance & Music” combines jazz, ballet, modern dance, butoh, and world fusion with experimental original works. San Francisco Magazine proclaims, “It’s a little like getting fed by Iron Chef: 11 teams of emerging choreographers, dancers, composers, and musicians serve up their best efforts — and quick, giving us a chance to see what the up-and-coming have been up to.”
Among the teams slated to perform are: Spinning Yarns Dance Collective co-founders Susan Donham and Apryl Renee with synth-pop artist and electric violinist Perry Spinali; New Dance Company Artistic Director Lisa Rie with acclaimed horn player and San Francisco composer Andrew Ardizzoia; and award-winning dancer Raissa Simpson with Bay Area guitarist and “Collaboration!” Musical Director Keith Moore.
This year’s program also features a performance by composer and Warr guitar player Jeff Weitzel, working with San Jose-based choreographer Helena Birecki, whose movement influences range from ballet and jazz to rhythmic gymnastics.
“Collaboration!” runs September 15–17 at Fort Mason Center’s Cowell Theater. For event details and ticket information, see September 15 or visit www.collaborationdancemusic.org.
