Four Weekends of Dance

Cowell Theater

Dance is what’s happening at the Cowell Theater in the merry month of May. Four programs — one for each weekend and ranging from modern to classical ballet — offer dance aficionados a real treat.

DancEsteem’s 10th Annual Dance Performance
Takami Craddock directs this one-of-a-kind family event. Students, from three to 15 years old, perform with RAW Dance and drummer Jimmi Nakagawa to create a taiko dance showcase on Sunday, May 6. DancEsteem’s mission, based on the belief that children are natural dancers, is for young dancers to develop their own identity and creativity through movement.

School Of The Arts (SOTA) 25th Anniversary Dance Concert
Under the direction of Elvia Marta, the SOTA concert features a variety of dancers and styles with choreography by students, artists-in-residence, and guest choreographers Yannis Adoniou and Cheryl Chaddick. Performances are on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, beginning May 17. SOTA’s mission “is to provide a specialized high school program and learning environment conducive to creative and independent thinking and artistic and academic excellence for promising students of the arts.” Programs include writing, theater, dance, music, and the visual arts.

Carnival arrives for two performances on Saturday, May 26 and a matinee on Sunday, May 27. This is the annual Spring Showcase from the City Ballet School and the City Youth Ballet featuring such classical pieces as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty as well as contemporary work by Yuri Zhukov and Yuri Possokhov. The evening finale is Carnival of the Animals with its traditional score brought up-to-date by Zhukov. City Youth Ballet is designed to give aspiring pre-professional ballet dancers a chance to develop in performance. City Ballet School offers training in classic Russian Vaganova method.

Tickets for all four programs are available through the Cowell Theater box office and online at www.fortmason.org/boxoffice. For more information, click on the opening dates for each listing above.
