Herbst International Exhibition Hall, Presidio
Afghan American author Khaled Hosseini — vaulted to literary icon status through his best-selling novel The Kite Runner — has done it again. With A Thousand Splendid Suns, he has penned “another searing epic of Afghanistan in turmoil,” according to Publishers Weekly.
On Thursday, June 7, Hosseini reads from Splendid Suns at the Herbst International Exhibition Hall in the Presidio. Following this exclusive San Francisco appearance, he signs copies of his books. The event is sponsored by Haight-Ashbury’s longtime independent, The Booksmith.
Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he spent much of his early life, Hosseini moved to the United States in 1980. Informed by these experiences, he interweaves stories of personal and national tragedy to create an absorbing narrative of deep despair and enduring hope. Told through the lives of two Afghan women, his latest book covers three decades of anti-Soviet jihad, civil war, and the tyranny of Taliban rule.
Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, his first novel, was an international bestseller published in 38 countries. In 2006 he was named a goodwill envoy to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He currently lives in northern California.
