Cowell Theater
Variety is the name of the game at the Cowell Theater this month as student, professional, and pre-professional performers team up to present an engaging entertainment lineup.
The first weekend of the month the Merola Opera returns with the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri’s The Hotel Casablanca. The comedy, sung in English, is based on the Faydeau play, A Flea In Her Ear, and is set in the mythical Double-T Ranch and the seedy Hotel Casablanca circa 1948.
The performance is the culminating experience of the 11-week training program of San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Company. The company delighted Cowell Theater-goers last month with a performance of Gioacchino Rossini’s La Cenerentola.

The following week, on Thursday August 9, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet presents its annual pre-professional performances. Following a four-week training program, gifted students from around the world perform works by Yannis Adoniou, Kara Davis, Enrico Labayan, Amy Raymond, and Layla Amis.

On the last weekend in August, San Francisco’s Metronome Dance Center presents its annual student/teacher showcase, this year’s For The Love Of Dance. Julie Lowe — former principal dancer with the Oakland Ballet — directs more than 50 student and professional dancers in a stunning evening of tango, Latin, salsa, swing, and ballroom dancing, among other styles. Guest artists include swing sensations and dance competition winners Arjay Centeno and Melissa Rutz. Acclaimed Argentine tango artists Christy Coté and Darren Lees are also in the lineup.
