Oktoberfest, Germany’s world famous celebration of beer, food, and merrymaking, is observed right here in San Francisco again this year at Fort Mason Center.
Oktoberfest By the Bay, hosted by American Showplace Productions, includes nonstop music, dancing, singing, and some of the best food and drink that Germany has to offer. Following in the tradition of Munich’s renowned fair, guests enjoy German fare ranging from bratwurst to schweine haxe, pretzels to wienershnitzel, and everything in between. Of course there is also plenty of beer from breweries such as Spaten of Munich.
Northern California’s very own Chico Bavarian Band is headlining this year’s event once again. For more than 30 years the band has entertained crowds with traditional brass sounds including a career highlighting performance in 1997 at the Munich Oktoberfest. In addition The Internationals yodel and sing the day away while the Nature Friends Schuhplattlers perform German folkdances.
In addition to the festivities, a wide array of German-American historical and cultural exhibits is on display, including booths staffed by the German Consulate General, the Goethe Institute, and local German newspapers and schools.
The festival is produced in association with the United German-American Societies of San Francisco (UGAS). Founded in 1890, UGAS works to achieve cooperation among the more than 60 German Clubs that exist throughout the Bay Area.
Oktoberfest runs October 11–14 at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion. For event details and ticket information, see October 11 in the Calendar or visit www.oktoberfestbythebay.com.
