NOVEMBER 2007

It’s Gift Season — The Craftswomen Are Back

Celebration of CraftswomenHerbst Pavilion

Jewelry maker Carter SeibelsShoppers looking for unique substitutes for mass-produced goods can find one-of-a-kind offerings —just in time for the holidays. The Women’s Building 29th Annual Celebration of Craftswomen opens for two weekends, November 24 and 25 and December 1 and 2 in the Herbst Pavilion with its usual fine crafts retail fair and the largest event exclusively featuring the work of fine craftswomen anywhere.

In fact the show, a benefit for the Women’s Building, features a changing roster of more than 150 different artists each weekend. Look for personal care items, home accessories, lighting, photography, paintings, paper, books, and frames. Highlights of this year’s show also include work by Shizuko Shichishima, Eileen Goldenberg, Willy Scholten, Catherine Reece, Carter Siebels, and Trish Culbert.

Handwoven clothing by Rosemarie KeliherThe Women’s Building is a community center that offers services to “help women and girls achieve self-sufficiency and pursue their dreams.” Programs include a free bilingual Spanish/English information and referral service, educational support for low-income adults, financial counseling, and programs that promote arts, culture, and discussion. The building, in San Francisco’s Mission district, houses ten community groups.

For the last 28 years, the craft fair has been part of a movement—led by female artists—that offers “environmentally conscious and economically sustainable choices for mainstream consumption.”
