DECEMBER 2007

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A
CREATIVE BREAKTHROUGH

Herbst Pavilion

The Celebration of Craftswomen offers holiday shoppers a second chance to buy beautiful handmade objects on the final weekend of their show and sale in Fort Mason Center’s Herbst Pavilion in early December. On both weekends, the fair showcases work from more than 300 female artists. Each weekend of the show features creations from more than 150 different artists.

Shoppers can select from a gorgeous array of unique handcrafted objects, such as luminous glass art, personal care products made in small batches from fine ingredients, home accessories, clothing, jewelry, and more. Many forms of media and craft traditions are represented, including fiber art, metalwork, leather craft, sculpture, photography, painting, ceramics, and book arts. The fair benefits The Women’s Building community center in San Francisco.

The 2007 festival also focuses on environmentally conscious and economically sustainable methods and materials. A number of craft artisans exhibiting at the fair use recycled and organic substances in their work. For example, Eileen Goldenberg presents her work composed of encaustics – paint made from beeswax, tree resin, and pigments, as well as her trademark ceramic teapots.

Jewelry artist Willy Scholten assembles fabulous pieces from recycled materials such as steel mesh and springs and rubber gaskets, adding precious metals, pearls, and stones. Kelly Smith creates her Rubber Ducky Soap products in small quantities using high-quality natural formulations. Many of the other artists at the fair follow similar principles and support sustainable philosophies with their work.

In keeping with their tradition to provide opportunities for women, the Women’s Building launched an Emerging Artist Program to attract new or younger artists to the Celebration of Craftswomen. The new program has already enjoyed success with the addition of 10-year-old Zoe Turin’s hand-painted cards to the 2007 fair, along with work from other fledgling artists.

Discover new art and new ways of making art at the Celebration of Craftswomen. Find more details in the December 1 calendar listing and at www.celebrationofcraftswomen.org.
