JANUARY 2008

Capacitor’s biome

Cowell Theater

The Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica was the inspiration for local dance group Capacitor’s latest artistic endeavor: biome. Part dance, part projected images of the rainforests, part science, and part environmental message, the new project is the result of weeks spent on location in the rainforest collaborating with canopy tree scientists.

The full title of the evening’s presentation is biome, an exploration of desire and yearning in the natural world. The world of biome is described as a place where ties between humans and our planet become clear as everything is interconnected in a cycle of growth: people become plants which become animals as we develop a deeper understanding of our own motivations and impulses.

biome is the fifth project of Capacitor Lab, who has presented highly innovative shows at the Cowell Theater in the past. The current show premiered in November 2007 in El Salvador. The San Francisco premier at the Cowell Theater is sponsored by the International Canopy Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the study and conservation of forest canopies. Each performance of biome is preceded by an illustrated talk by world-renowned tree canopy ecologist and author, Dr. Nalini Nadkarni. Also, local, regional, and national conservation groups have information tables in the lobby before the performances.

biome plays January 25 and 26. For more information and to view a video of one of the biome dances, visit www.capacitor.org. See the January 25 calendar listing for performance details. Capacitor’s biome production is a recipient of a Fort Mason Foundation “In Performance Series” award.
