JANUARY 2008

From Masters
to Modern —
The San Francisco Fine Print Fair

Conference Center, Building A

This January Fort Mason Center once again hosts The San Francisco Fine Print Fair. The annual exhibition and sale includes 18 select fine art dealers from the US and Canada with inventories comprising five centuries of fine prints ranging from Old Master to Contemporary.

Lithographs by Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall, original etchings by Rembrandt, German Expressionist prints, woodcuts by Dürer, and prints by Hiroshige and Hokusai are all on display and for sale. Many California artists are also represented. The show, running Saturday and Sunday, January 19 and 20, offers connoisseurs and new collectors alike an opportunity to examine and learn about the history of printmaking, printmaking techniques, and the work of many artists.

The San Francisco Fine Print Fair is sponsored by the International Fine Print Dealers Association and is free and open to the public. Take advantage of a rare opportunity to ask questions from knowledgeable dealers. A free short lecture series on Prints and Print Collecting takes place on Sunday morning. Featured talks include “Modern Printmaking in France: A Social Revolution” by Bernard Derroitte of Armstrong Fine Art, “The Meiji Period: Linking Edo to Modern Japanese Prints” by Carolyn Staley of Carolyn Staley Fine Japanese Prints, and “The Armchair Traveler: Sightseeing with Canaletto, Piranesi, and Others” by Betsy G. Fryberger, Burton and Deedee McMurtry Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford.

Friday evening's preview and reception offers guests an advanced look at the show with catered wine and hors d’oeuvres. Sponsored by the Achenbach Graphic Arts Council, the proceeds benefit the acquisition fund of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts. The foundation is part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Karin Breuer, Acting Curator of the Achenbach, conducts an informal discussion about selected prints.
