Twenty years ago the Gold Country Classic gymnastics competition began in Northern California. At the time, it was a boys-only event and a fundraiser for the gymnastics booster club of its founder, Eric Totman. The event proved to be so popular that each year brought more and more young gymnasts and a growing waiting list of hopeful competitors. In 2005 Totman discovered Fort Mason Center and — in its large pavilions — saw the potential for expanding the competition. The move to the spacious Herbst Pavilion in 2006 made possible the addition of a women’s competition and the ability to hold both men’s and women’s events simultaneously under the same roof.
On February 16 three days of balancing, vaulting, and all-around athletic excellence begins for more than 500 competitors ranging in age from six to 18 years of age. Competition levels include beginners to advanced gymnasts in all forms of the sport, from floor competition to table vaults to rings and bars.
Hopeful parents can watch their future Olympians free of distraction as a Kids’ Kamp childcare service is offered onsite for a nominal charge.
