FEBRUARY 2008

A Little Music, Song, & Dance

Cowell Theater

It’s a busy month at Fort Mason Center’s (FMC’s) Cowell Theater. No less than six performance groups — three musical and three dance — are featured.

Company C, Photo: Marty SohlCompany C Contemporary Ballet starts off the month with two performances on February 9 and 10. The repertory company celebrates the diversity and individuality of its performers, choreographers and movement styles with an eclectic lineup. This season’s program features “The Envelope,” a premier by David Parsons. Also scheduled is Antony Tudor’s rarely-performed 1937 masterpiece, “Dark Elegies,” Alexander Proia’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” and company artistic director Charles Anderson’s “Hush,” set to music by Bobbi McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma.

The Pacific Chamber Symphony returns to FMC on February 12. Last heard here in October, 2007 — in a performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos that was called “electrifying” by the San Francisco Chronicle—Maestro Lawrence Kohl’s ensemble returns with pieces from the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. The group performs Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn and Orchestra, and Bartok’s Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste. Although two centuries apart in composition, both pieces are influenced by the concerto grosso style, and illustrate Mozart’s and Bartok’s unique approach.

Eroica Trio, Photo: Nina ChoiAnother celebrated musical ensemble performs at the Cowell Theater that same week. The Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio is here on Friday, February 15. Known for their flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm, and sensual elegance, the trio performs both classical standards and daring contemporary works with ease. They have toured the United States, Europe, and Asia, and have released six critically-lauded recordings garnering multiple Grammy nominations in the process.

The San Francisco Youth Eurythmy Troupe performs the next evening, February 16. Under the direction of long-time artistic director Astrid Thiersch, the group presents “Awakening,” an Egyptian-themed evening that includes a fairy tale called “Princess Sinhold,” music from Verdi’s Aida, and poetry by Akhenaton, Rumi, and Gibran. Geometric artist Frank Chester is special guest. This is the 13th annual performance of this unique group.

Ellis Wood Dance, Photo: Steven SchreiberEllis Wood Dance returns to FMC on February 21 and 22. The New York City-based group is joined by guests Jeff Curtis, Janice Garrett, Margaret Jenkins, Jo Kreiter, Lisa Wymore, and Sheldon Smith. Wood’s performances have been dubbed “controlled volatility” by one reviewer, and in Wood’s own words, “ride the fine line between control and freedom.” When joined by the Bay Area artists listed above, this performance promises to be one not to be missed.

A dedicated love of music is behind the formation of the Sincerity Girls Ensemble. Bay Area music education studio Music Repertoire presents this dynamic group of talented young women in “Girls Night Out — With Sincerity“ on February 23. Music Repertoire’s director Henry Torres directs the group in a concert that includes a variety of musical genres including pop, classical, R & B, religious, and more. Sincerity has performed throughout the Bay Area as well as in Italy and Spain.

For more information for each of these performances, please see the calendar listings.
