"A World of Fire and Ice” is the theme for this year’s Art Inspiring Hope Gala for the Okizu Foundation. The black-tie (red-hot or ice-blue tie optional) fundraiser is a benefit for Camp Okizu, a summer camp and peer support program for children with cancer and their families.
“Okizu” is derived from the Sioux language and means “unity,” “to come together,” “to heal a hurt,” and “to make whole.” All of these meanings apply to the mission and philosophy of the Okizu Foundation. All children need the opportunity to grow, experiment, and discover independence. Children with cancer often miss these opportunities. Their illness, treatment, and complications keep them from enjoying activities that are often taken for granted by children without cancer. Camp Okizu, a summer residential camp in the Sierras, offers children with cancer the chance to explore and enjoy a normal life experience. As one camper said, “All I know is that camp has given me a certain confidence…I am at peace at camp.”
Art Inspiring Hope is the largest fundraiser for the Okizu Foundation. What began as a small art auction in 1995 has grown to an event hosting 500 people and raising almost $600,000 each year. This year’s gala, “A World of Fire and Ice,” is described as “a party that is hot, hot, hot in a mythic land that is as cool as anything you can imagine.” A hosted reception, silent and live auctions, gourmet dinner, and headlining entertainment make up the evening. Attendees are advised to purchase tickets early, as this event always sells out.
Support a very worthwhile cause and have a great time doing it. For details see March 8 in the calendar and visit www.okizu.org.
