A new literary series at the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library Book Bay bookstore in Fort Mason Center (FMC) celebrates green living, environmental consciousness, and sustainable practices. The Green Ink series features noted authors reading from their works and discussing green issues at free in-store events.
The first Green Ink event on April 9 presents meditation teacher and gardening mentor Wendy Johnson. Johnson co-founded the organic gardening program at the San Francisco (SF) Zen Center’s Green Gulch Farm in Marin County, CA and has gardened and meditated for more than 30 years. She reads from her new book, Gardening at the Dragon’s Gate: At Work in the Wild and Cultivated World.
For more than 25 years, Johnson has conducted green education and gardening workshops for the public. She has taught alongside Annie Somerville, Executive Chef at the Zen Center’s Greens Restaurant in FMC, and advises the Chez Panisse Foundation’s Edible Schoolyard program. In her new book, she shares hands-on gardening tips, plant lore, and insights into inner and outer growth.
Green Ink events focus on themes related to the environment and climate change and emphasize solutions for everyday life. The San Francisco Botanical Garden Society at the Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park co-sponsors Green Ink with the Friends of the SF Public Library.
At Green Ink events, authors recommend resources and activities for exploring relevant issues in more depth. Future events in the series include a May 14 session with Alrie Middlebrook, president of Middlebrook Gardens, an ecology-based landscape design and native plant gardening firm. On June 11, science journalist Susan Freinkel discusses her research and the basis of her book, American Chestnut, The Life, Death, and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree.
