Cowell Theater
Music in a minor key is the mode when the Pacific Chamber Symphony returns with the music of Chopin and Saint-Saëns during the final performance of their three-concert series at the Cowell Theater.
First on the program at the April 29 concert is Camille Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 2 in A minor, described on the Chamber Symphony’s web site as traveling “through the dark beauty of the minor key to joyful rapture.” Saint-Saëns composed five symphonies, of which only three are numbered. Today they are considered to be a major contribution to the genre at a time when the French symphonic tradition was in decline.
French pianist Denis Pascal joins the Symphony for a work by Frederic Chopin, the Concerto No. 2 in F minor. Composed when the composer was only 20 years of age, the piece is considered to be one of the most beautiful piano concertos. Pianist Pascal is a renowned chamber pianist who has recorded the music of Beethoven, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Chopin, among others, including the concerto he is performing with the Pacific Chamber Symphony here at the Cowell.
The 30-member Pacific Chamber Symphony has been thrilling Bay Area audiences for almost 20 years. Founded in 1989, the virtuoso group, under the direction and guidance of maestro Lawrence Kohl, has performed more than 400 different works in more than 500 concert appearances. Their educational programs have brought classical music to more than 200,000 Bay Area children through concerts, master classes, and training in their Tri-Valley Youth Orchestra.
For a memorable musical experience, enjoy the Pacific Chamber Symphony on April 29 in the Cowell Theater. Visit www.pacificchambersymphony.org and see the April 29 calendar listing for more information.
