MAY 2008

A Merry Month Of Dance

Cowell Theater

Student dancers entertain at the Cowell Theater this May with five different groups taking the stage throughout the month.

“Children are natural dancers,” says Artistic Director Takami Craddock. “My mission is for these young dancers to develop their own identity and creativity through movement.”
This year guest artist Sanae Hara, from Japan, also performs.

For more information see May 4 in the calendar and www.mobudancestudio.com.

Young professional and pre-professional dancers ages 17 through 22 perform when the LINES Ballet School Ensemble takes the Cowell stage on May 9 and 10. The LINES Ballet training program values artistic risk-taking, encourages independent thinking and problem solving, and has the ultimate goal of successfully preparing students for a professional career in dance.

The performance showcases work by Alonzo King, Yannis Adoniou, Kara Davis, Gregory Dawson, Arturo Fernandez, Gail Gilbert, and Robert Moses. Dancers from LINES/Dominican BFA program are joined by guests from Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet.
See May 9 in the calendar and www.linesballet.org for more information.

On Mother’s Day — May 11 — Marina Classical Ballet and Mountain International Dance Company jointly present the United Spring Dance Concert. Jazz, ballet, contemporary, and folk are some of the dances presented by the young artists.

See May 11 in the calendar for details.

That same week, the San Francisco School of the Arts (SOTA) presents the SOTA 26th Annual Dance Concert. The concert represents the diversity of styles of the San Francisco public high school’s talented student body. Elvia Marta directs the production, and the choreography is by the students and artists-in-residence, including Graciela Acedo, Lynn Brilhante, Brittany Brown Ceres, Lee Wei Chao, Gregory Dawson, Milissa Payne, Juan Pazmino, and special guest choreographer Enrico Labayen.

See May 16 in the calendar for details.

“A life enriched through dance” is the goal of the training offered by City Ballet School. Based in the classical Russian tradition as experienced by Artistic Director Galina Alexandrova at the Bolshoi Academy in Moscow, the school strives to supply the skills that — when combined with talent — create well-rounded dancers.

The City Ballet School Spring Showcase on May 24 and 25 highlights the talented and gifted young dancers and choreographers in this program. Students ages six to 17 perform new works as well as classics, including the grand pas from Don Quixote.

For more information, see May 24 in the calendar and visit www.cityballetschool.org.
