Magic Theatre Sets a new Stage
Magic Theatre, Building D
Magic Theatre has a new Artistic Director. Replacing Chris Smith — who is stepping down after five seasons in the role — is Loretta Greco. Ms. Greco comes to the job with an impressive resume. She is a widely respected director and developer of new plays, has been the producing director of New York’s Women’s Project and has served as an associate director and staff producer for New Jersey’s McCarter Theatre.
“Loretta’s resume and reputation speak volumes,” said David Jobin, Magic Theatre’s managing Director. “And personally, I am thrilled to have her on board.”
Ms. Greco is the sixth person to hold the Artistic Director position in the Magic’s 41-year history — and only the second woman. In addition to the directing experience already listed, she has directed at theaters throughout the country as well as at the Magic Theatre. She staged Magic’s world premiere of Morbidity & Mortality during the 2005-2006 season. She also has directed Speed-The-Plow, Blackbird, and Lackawanna Blues for the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) here in San Francisco.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to partner with David Jobin in launching the next era of adventuresome work at Magic Theatre,” said Ms. Greco. “…I can’t wait to bring my passion for new work to a city I adore and to join San Francisco’s rich and wonderful community of artists.”
