This June the Fifth Annual International RoboGames once again takes place at Fort Mason Center. This unique event, described by Wired magazine as one of the “10 Best North American Geek Fests,” is educational, entertaining, and basically out of this world.
Robots and their human allies from all over the world compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals. Hundreds of teams of robots, engineers, and athletes go head to head in over 70 events divided into several categories. “Humanoid Challenges” include Septathalon, BasketBall, and Obstacle Run. “Robo-One/Androids” competitions include kung-fu and acrobatics. The Combat category is also an exciting part of the event with matches grouped according to the weights of the robots. But do not expect just physical prowess to be on display. Robots in all shapes and sizes use their diverse skills to do everything from solving mazes to fighting fires to mixing drinks. Sumo, Hockey, and Art Bots round out the fun lineup and there is a Junior League for those enthusiasts who are under 18.
Educating the next generation and keeping events accessible are top RoboGames priorities. Children and school teams enter contests for free and young spectators get in free on Friday. Affordable RoboGames contests are open to all — from professional and university research teams to amateur challengers. Admission is free for active duty enlisted military and dependents and entry fees are 50 percent off for reservists and officers.
